—Why I’m doing this—
In the early 90’s I attended Veteran’s Elementary and the musical director, Amy Vorreyor, had a massive impact on my life. I had been taking private drum lessons since I was seven years old, so when in the 5th grade band class was introduced I thought it was a no brainer to play drums in band. I soon learned that drums were not an option in band until the 7th grade. Amy, along with my private instructor Lee Warner worked with me to instead transform that and the following year’s choir class into a percussion ensemble. We played school assemblies and even made the news touring other local elementary schools!
The experience gave me such an appreciation for music teachers who go above and beyond for their kids. I still play today and have now toured the world playing drums.
Amy and Lee have since passed, but in their memory I hope to inspire today’s youth to play music no matter what.
